Before Your First Appointment

A thorough hearing evaluation includes a number of tests to determine your hearing ability, but equally important is the time we spend getting to know you and your needs. When you arrive for your visit, we’ll ask you to complete a new patient form that reviews your medical history, including information about any injuries, trauma, or exposure to loud sounds. Certain medications can also contribute to hearing loss, so it’s essential that we have all of your prescription information on hand.

We encourage patients to bring a loved one with them to their appointment, as it’s helpful to have the support of a friend or family member during this initial visit. Our team values any questions that you might have and we know that it can be helpful to discuss treatment options with someone you love and trust before making a decision.

Hearing Testing

We’re proud to offer our patients the latest technology when it comes to your hearing test. We’ll ask you to put on a pair of specialized headphones and we will play a variety of sounds that range in frequency and volume. By raising your hand each time you hear a sound emitted, it allows us to better understand which tones you are able to clearly hear and which ones you cannot. Since hearing loss presents itself in a variety of ways, this information will paint an overall picture of the best types of treatment for your specific needs.

The hearing evaluation may include any of the following tests:

• Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing
• Tympanometry or acoustic immittance testing
• Bone conduction testing
• Air conduction testing
• Speech testing
• Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) testing

Reviewing Your Results

After we have completed your comprehensive hearing evaluation, our staff will review your results in detail. We utilize a tool called an audiogram which illustrates your current level of hearing ability. You’ll be able to clearly see and understand which frequencies and volumes are within your hearing range and which ones you may be missing on a day to day basis. Not only will an audiogram help us to establish any patterns, but it will guide us to the treatment options that are most appropriate.

We’ll review the most appropriate hearing devices for your particular type of hearing loss and we encourage you to ask us any questions you might have.
